Printing the unconventional, the radical, and the political is part of what we do at ExWhyZed. One of our remarkable projects in this area was the “Hate Zine Issue 2”. This A5 booklet is more than just a publication; it’s a conversation starter, tackling critical social and political topics through various creative forms. In this case study, we delve into the printing process behind this iconic example of political zine printing.
Hate Zine is a not-for-profit project that gives voice to artists, writers, and activists who challenge the status quo. The second issue, the “Sex & Gender Issue”, pushes this envelope even further, exploring important discussions around these themes. Created with a punk DIY ethos, Hate Zine epitomises the very spirit of zines as a platform for alternative voices and narratives.
To keep the spirit of zines alive, the print details were kept classic and straightforward. The 76-page A5 portrait booklet was designed with a self-cover on 100gsm Evolution Uncoated stock. The uncoated paper gives the zine an earthy feel, aligning with the grassroots nature of zine culture.
Printed with our state-of-the-art HP digital press, the zine featured four-colour print throughout. This method of printing allowed for the vibrant artwork and striking textual content to come to life. Once printed, the zines were trimmed, collated, and wire stitched, resulting in a product that is both professional and true to the zine style.
